Vast sums are wagered at the week-long race-meeting at the end of July, which attracts thousands from all over Ireland to the suburb of Ballybrit. A variety of other festivals keep the city busy all through the summer, as Galway has gone back to its historic pre-occupation with making money.

During the summer months traffic congestion is virtually unbearable in the city. Visitors have to go through part of its ugly sprawling suburbs to get to the beautiful western regions of the county.
