County Carlow (Contae Cheatharlach) (pop.50,500), despite encroachment by housing estates for DUBLIN commuters, still has pleasantly varied countryside stretching eastwards from the leafy banks of River Slaney and the imposing Blackstairs Mountains to the scenic valley of the River Barrow. The county is dotted with places of interest, notably the ancient megaliths at Browne’s Hill and Haroldstown, the ecclesiastical sites at St Mullins, Myshall, Killeshin and Old Leighlin, stately homes and demesnes such as Lisnavagh House & Gardens, Huntington Castle, Dunleckney Manor, Borris House, Hardymount Gardens, Duckett’s Grove and the wonderful Altamount Gardens.
