The Legend of Oisín and Tír na nÓg.
Oisin, the son of Fionn Mac Cumhail, was invited to Tír na nÓg, the land of perpetual youth, by a beautiful girl named Niamh. He decided to go with her. So, on an evening in June the two set off on a white horse from Rossbeigh beach and galloped off out over the waves to Tír na nÓg.
Many years later Oisín longed to see his old friends back in Ireland. Niamh begged him not to go but eventually conceded saying “you must not dismount from your horse”!.
When Oisin arrived back at Rossbeigh he headed for Ballaghisheen (derived from the Gaelic translation of ´Oisin´s Pass´) but he failed to find his friends. It was near here that he met some men trying to move a bolder at the roadside. Surprised by the feeble performance of the men he reached down to help them. However, the girth broke and Oisín fell to the ground. The horse immediately took off back to Niamh and as he lay on the ground he turned into an old, old man, before crumbling into dust.
